Diazepam Side Effects — What to Expect in the First Week
Like every benzodiazepine, diazepam has a familiar side-effect profile. Most are mild and dose-dependent — bigger dose, more sedation. A few are rare and worth knowing in advance.
Common, expected effects
- Drowsiness and reduced reaction time
- Mild muscle weakness — careful on stairs in the first hours
- Short-term memory dips around peak dose
- Reduced anxiety and emotional flatness
Less common
- Dry mouth, mild nausea
- Headache the next morning
- “Hangover” sedation lasting into the next day (long half-life)
Rare — call a doctor
- Paradoxical agitation (increased anxiety, irritability instead of calm)
- Breathing slowed enough to feel obvious
- Severe rash or facial swelling
Never mix with
Alcohol, opioids (codeine, oxycodone, methadone), or other benzodiazepines. The combined respiratory depression is what kills people on benzodiazepines — almost never diazepam alone.
