Diazepam for Anxiety in the UK — When It Helps and When It Doesn’t

Diazepam is one of the most effective short-term anxiety medications ever made. It is also one of the easiest to misuse. Both things are true.

Where it shines

Acute, situational anxiety — a panic attack, pre-flight nerves, the night before a procedure, an acute grief spike. Onset is fast, dose response is predictable, and a single 5mg dose can take a 9/10 panic down to a 3/10 within an hour.

Where it doesn’t

Daily chronic anxiety over months. Tolerance builds within 2–4 weeks of regular use, the dose creeps up, and you end up needing 10mg to get the effect 5mg used to give. SSRIs (sertraline, escitalopram) and CBT do the long-term work better.

A sensible UK pattern

2–4 tablets a month for acute spikes, alongside whatever long-term treatment your GP recommends. That keeps diazepam working when you actually need it.

This article is general information for UK readers and is not a substitute for personal medical advice. Always speak to a doctor or pharmacist before starting, changing or stopping diazepam.
