Diazepam 2mg vs 5mg vs 10mg — Which Strength Is Right for You?
Diazepam comes in three standard UK strengths: 2mg, 5mg and 10mg. The active ingredient is identical — the dose is what changes everything about onset, duration and side effects.
2mg — the taper / starter dose
2mg is the lowest standard adult tablet. It is most often used for mild anxiety, gentle starter dosing, or as the bottom step of a taper down from 5mg / 10mg. Many long-term users finish a taper at 2mg every other day for several weeks.
5mg — the everyday dose
5mg is the strength most UK prescribers reach for first for short-term anxiety, muscle spasm or pre-flight nerves. Onset 20–40 minutes, peak around 60–90 minutes, subjective effect 4–6 hours.
10mg — the strong-spasm / withdrawal dose
10mg is the highest standard tablet and is routinely used for stronger anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, severe spasm or pre-procedure sedation. It is not where first-time users should start.
Half-life and stacking
Diazepam has a long active half-life (20–50 hours). Repeat doses stack quickly — taking 5mg three times a day means by day three you are running closer to a 15mg steady state than you might think. Plan around that.
